Something Fishy in the Can: Why There’s Green in Your Cat’s Food

GASP! What is that?!

A strong, guttural meeeeeoooowwww comes from the kitchen. You jump up to investigate. Oh, it’s dinner time… five minutes ago. A shiny pink can catches your eye, and you giggle because it’s called “Kitty Gone Wild.” You used to watch those 90s commercials after 10 p.m., so the name hits a nostalgic nerve.

You pop the top and the aroma of the sea fills the air. Smelly sardines hit your nose like a wave. GASP! There’s luminous green right on top of your cat’s dinner. WHAT IS THAT?!

From “Ew” to “Awesome”

Go grab a lottery ticket, because you just won. Opening a can of Weruva Kitty Gone Wild and seeing green can be surprising, but that little pop of color is a special treat from the sea: algae.

Before we dive deeper, let’s clear one thing up. If something ever seems off or unexpected, we always want to hear from you. You are our eyes into every meal you serve, so if something seems abnormal we are always available to chat about your concerns.

But in this case, don’t freak out. That green is not a mistake, it’s a mark of nature. That tiny splash of color is your cat’s proof of freshness and quality.

Sardinie-Weenies

Sardines are the ocean’s potato chip: small, addictive, but much better for you (and your pet) than you might expect. These silvery swimmers are obsessed with phytoplankton, tiny, algae-rich organisms that make the ocean (and sardines) thrive. Their bellies fill up with omega-3-packed algae, which sometimes shows up as that little green shimmer in our sardine recipes.

A school of sardines running a million deep can be found off the clean coasts of our friends in Thailand, where the water is clear, the ecosystem balanced, and the fish abundant. Sardines thrive there, growing fast, reproducing often, and living short lives. This fast turnaround time makes them one of the most sustainable sources of seafood.

Glitter with Gills

These glittery mobs of sardines sparkle near the top of the ocean. Their size and sparkle make them easy to spot and harvest for both human and pet consumption.

Weruva preserves what nature made perfect. We clean and cook our sardines just as they are: scales, tails, and yes, sometimes their breakfast of algae. By keeping the fish whole, we keep their natural nutrition intact, delivering pure protein, healthy omega-3s, and essential minerals just as nature intended.

Phyto to Paw Lickin’

Phytoplankton are microscopic solar panels floating on the ocean’s surface, soaking up sunlight and photosynthesizing — turning carbon dioxide into oxygen that powers nearly half the world’s breathable air.

Sardines scoop up these omega-3-rich plankton and transform them into concentrated nutrition. That’s what makes sardines a true superfood. When Weruva plops one of these little guys into a can, it brings your pet a taste of nature’s cleanest protein.

From Sea to Bowl

Algae bloom; sardines swoon; fishermen scoop; factory preps; cans ship; cats flip.

Each step connects the ocean to your cat’s bowl, keeping nature’s story intact.
The ocean doesn’t waste a shimmer, a green fleck, or a ray of sunlight. Sardines are the ocean’s overachievers, passing that power straight to your cat. So if you spot a bit of green in Two to Tango one night, remember, it’s perfectly fine. It’s a little gift from the sea.

Now go buy that lottery ticket.
