Your Top Pet Nutrition Questions from 2025, Answered!

Throughout the year, our Customer Experience team receives thoughtful questions about nutrition, ingredients, and how our foods are made. To make things easier, we’ve rounded up the topics that came up most often in 2025.

Here are the five areas pet parents asked about the most:

1. Will you be expanding the Wx Phos Focused line to include other proteins? The Wx Phos Focused proteins aren't suitable for my cats, what other options do you have?

We're so happy that our Wx Phos Focused line has provided a low phosphorus option for so many cats in need. Since this line is still quite new, it's limited to only a few recipes. The good news is that many of our other Weruva recipes are also low in phosphorus, often below 0.8 percent on a dry-matter basis, and may be suitable options for cats who need a lower-phosphorus diet.

These values can help guide discussions with your veterinarian as you decide which recipe best fits your cat’s dietary needs.

2. What triggers allergies in cats? If my cat is allergic to chicken, can he eat a recipe that has chicken fat? Why do you call a recipe fish-free if it still has fish oil?

Based on our research, cat allergies to specific meats are usually caused by the presence of protein in the muscle meat, and not from the presence of animal fats or oils. Due to the way cat allergies tend to behave, we don't believe the presence of pure chicken fat, or fish oil will trigger an allergic reaction for a cat that has an allergy to chicken or fish. However, if your cat has a specific allergy to chicken fat, or fish oil, we do not recommend feeding recipes with those ingredients.

Keep in mind though, every cat is different and we always recommend consulting with your vet when it comes to making choices around your cat's health.

3. Why do you use sunflower oil in your food? Is it toxic to cats?

Sunflower seed oil is added in small amounts to provide linoleic acid, an essential Omega 6 fatty acid that cats cannot produce on their own. A certain amount of linoleic acid is necessary to make the food a complete and balanced meal per AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials) guidelines. Linoleic acid is important for skin health, coat quality, growth, and immune support.

We balance Omega 6 and Omega 3 fatty acids carefully, using sunflower oil, fish oil, or both depending on the recipe. The amount of sunflower oil we use is very small and serves a nutritional purpose.

We would never recommend, for example, that you feed your cat pure sunflower oil on its own, but when it's correctly balanced against Omega 3 fatty acids, it provides all the health benefits listed above.

There is sometimes concern about toxins forming when sunflower oil is heated to very high temperatures. Weruva foods are cooked at much lower temperatures, only up to 250 degrees Fahrenheit, so there is no risk of toxin formation.

4. Where can I find the mineral content in your food? Do you have pH information about your recipes? Are any of your recipes suited for cats with urinary concerns?

While our foods are not formulated to prevent, treat or cure specific ailments, we have found they can be very helpful. The key is to feed a diet that mother nature intended from a meat and water standpoint, and this is what we have done with our foods. We believe hydration through high quality meat is the cornerstone of sound nutrition for our companions, and high-quality meat with moisture will naturally help promote urinary health.

For the urinary tract and kidneys (and overall health), water intake is of the utmost importance, and for cats, it is best accomplished with a wet diet. It is also important to balance urinary pH, use high quality meats and keep certain minerals on the lower side. High quality meat is of utmost importance, because the kidneys filter toxins in the blood (waste from processing proteins), and thus the higher quality the protein, the better. As you may know with our foods, we use the same cuts of meat as used in products for people, such as boneless, skinless chicken breast.

All our formulas promote a slightly acidic urinary pH, which is ideal for cats. Unfortunately, we do not have the pH levels for all of our formulas, but if you go to our Detailed Nutrition Page you can find the mineral content (like magnesium and potassium, for example) for all of our recipes!

5. Why do some cans seem to contain more liquid than others? How do you reduce variability across cans? What is the production process like?

We take product consistency very seriously here at Weruva, and we make every effort to achieve consistent proper fill of all ingredients in each can. To do this, we use a comprehensive triple-weigh system to ensure that the meat to liquid ratio is correct. First, the gravy goes into the can. The cans are then weighed. If there are any deviations beyond normal levels, all of them must be refilled. Next, the cans go down a conveyor where the solid ingredients, like the shreds of chicken or the flaked fish, are hand-placed into the can. They proceed down the conveyor and each can goes in one of three ways: straight on through if the weight is correct, one way if it's too heavy, and another way if it's too light. If there are too many heavy or light cans in this process, the entire process starts again. Then, after the cans are filled, a random check is done to see if they are at the proper weight.

This is also true for patés/purées. Some of our recipes have hand placed ingredients, such as Meows 'n Holler Purramid, so for that process, the purée is first poured in and weighed, and then hand-placed shrimp is added in and then weighed again. For pure, no-topper product – like all other patés and purées – everything remains the same except that there is much less variation since the weight doesn't vary much after the purée is poured in (since it's the only thing getting added to the can).

Please know we always have a 100% guarantee on our formulas, so if you or your kitties are ever dissatisfied for any reason, both opened and unopened cans may be returned to the place of purchase for a refund/credit.
